Instructions for Sharing Nebraska State Fair Virtual 4-H Static Exhibit Photos to Box

In preparation for the 2020 Nebraska State Fair, counties across the state are invited to submit photos of State Fair qualifying 4-H static exhibits entries that will not be a part of the physical County Booth display.

Taking Photos
Exhibits from the following project areas should be photographed for virtual entry:
- Foods and Nutrition
- Horticulture
- Large Exhibits (any items that can’t reasonably be transported or fit into the limited booth space)
- Items that require a secured display case

When taking photos, the best practices for photographing exhibits can be used. These include the following:
- Photo should show the entire exhibit. We recommend taking several photos from different angles and perspectives and selecting the best one. Be sure to take photos from an adequate distance so the entire exhibit is visible. For best results:
* Use natural light, but avoid direct sunlight. Do not use flash. Try photographing on an overcast day.
* Avoid cluttered backgrounds.
* Do not apply filters, text, or any other digital manipulation that inaccurately represents the exhibit.
* Avoid using the zoom feature on the camera whenever possible. Get physically closer instead.
* Avoid cropping the photo before submitting it.

- The preferred photo orientation is horizontal
- Photos must be of sufficient resolution and size for digital sharing. Images should have a minimum resolution of 72 ppi (pixels per inch), but higher is preferred. Images should also be a minimum of 700 pixels on the shortest side (height or width), but larger is preferred. Unless absolutely necessary, it is recommended to avoid cropping or resizing images prior to submission. Generally speaking, images taken by modern digital cameras will be sufficient for submission without resizing or cropping.
- Photos should not include people.

The following photo frame templates are also available:
1) PowerPoint Templates – photos can be taken using any camera/device and the images can be inserted into the PowerPoint frame (attached or found in Box), exported as .jpg files, and uploaded to Box.
2) Digital Photo Frame – alternatively, photos can be taken using the photo frame in the Nebraska 4-H State Fair app, saved to your photos, and uploaded to Box.

During county fair, it is recommended that all items selected for the Nebraska State Fair be photographed as families may opt not to participate or you may not be able to bring all items due to space restrictions.

Uploading Photos
4-H Extension Educators have been invited as editors of the NSF 4-H County Static Exhibit Photos Box folder (https://go.unl.edu/5b0t). They have been asked to invite additional editors from their counties as editors to the corresponding County Box folders. Attached is a list of folders that have been created.

Photos may be uploaded starting today. There is no deadline for uploading photos; however, we strongly encourage you to upload the majority of photos within 8-10 days after the close of your County Fair.

Photos submitted should be renamed using the following file title: ProjectArea_ExhibitorFirstName_LastName_Age

If using the Digital Photo Frame in the Nebraska 4-H State Fair app, download the Box app to your device and upload the photos on your device directly to your county’s Box folder.

Additional Notes
- Signage with a QR Code will be provided to allow visitors to view the virtual submissions.
- You may also consider printing photos of items for display in your booth.
- The Nebraska State 4-H Office will take a photo of all county displays at the Nebraska State Fair and will place these photos in the corresponding county Box folders.
- More resources are available in the County Booth Toolkit including State Fair graphics, exhibit tags, exhibit list templates, and social media graphics.
- 2020 Nebraska State Fair recognition ribbons will not be placed on each exhibit, but will be placed in a county packet that can be picked up at the end of the fair.
