New Student Organization: UNL Racial Justice Alliance

RJA
RJA

The UNL Racial Justice Alliance is a new student organization for undergraduate and graduate students committed to understanding, recognizing, and interrupting racism(s) within ourselves and all around us.

Here are a few FAQ for prospective new members:

What is the RJA?

The RJA is a discussion-based group for those of us who are committed to interrupting racism(s) in our everyday lives

What is the purpose of the group?

The purpose of the group is to create a space to talk, learn from one-another, and understand how racism(s) operate in all of our lives

Who is the group for?

Have you ever found yourself in an argument about race or had a conversation that you felt was steeped in racism, but you couldn’t find the words to describe it or respond to the racist individual?
Have you experienced racism and discrimination yourself and need a group of students to support you in unpacking those experiences?
Do you feel guilty or underinformed when it comes to racism?
Do you want to share your knowledge of complex racial systems?
Do you simply want to be a better racial actor in the world?
Then this group is for you!
We are recruiting Undergrads, grads, and community members who are racial justice oriented
What will the group do?

We will introduce a new topic each week, surrounding race and racism, engage in discussion, and formulate conclusions on ways we can go forth and better interact with said racialized issue

At each monthly meeting we will: introduce the topic, Rewind by offering some historical context surrounding the topic, get uncomfortable by thinking about how we may have perpetuated or condoned problematic racial assumptions in our lives, engage in some real talk where we unpack our experiences and the implications of our topic, and then work together to find tangible action steps to respond to this experience when we encounter it

What is the time commitment?

For the spring semester, we will hold one meeting each month over zoom. In signing on as a member, you are making a commitment to your fellow group members, which means you will attend meetings, and communicate via our slack page in-between meetings, and of course we’d love to schedule a few informal zoom happy hours and a couple coffee dates!

When can I join?
