Last summer, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln committed to learning from the past and acting in the present through Journey Towards Anti-Racism and Racial Equity. On April 28 from 3 to 4:15 p.m., the university community is invited to learn more about making impactful changes for diversity and inclusion from Paul Gorski, founder of the Equity Literacy Institute.
According to Gorski, the biggest barrier to equity and justice in many cases is not a lack of diversity and inclusion effort, but rather the tendency to mistake diversity and inclusion efforts with equity and justice commitments. During this special virtual event, “When Appreciating Diversity Is Not Enough,” Gorski will discuss how to ensure real shifts are prioritized over optics in equity, diversity and inclusion commitments.
The live Zoom webinar, hosted by UPC Nebraska and the Global Nebraska Coalition on Diversity and Inclusion, will include a presentation from Gorski followed by a question-and-answer session. The event is also sponsored by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and Student Affairs.
Gorski has more than 20 years of experience helping educators, nonprofit workers, and others strengthen their equity efforts. He has published more than 70 articles and 12 books on various aspects of educational equity including Reaching and Teaching Students in Poverty: Strategies for Erasing the Opportunity Gap and Case Studies on Diversity and Social Justice Education (with Seema Pothini). He is also the author of the Multicultural Pavilion, an online compendium of free resources for educators. Gorski earned his Ph.D. in Educational Evaluation at the University of Virginia.
With the support of UPC Nebraska, Gorski’s event is one of many the Global Nebraska Coalition on Diversity and Inclusion hopes to host in the future. The Coalition, which represents the four Global Affairs units at the university, seeks to elevate diversity, equity and inclusion efforts within the global context of higher education and work closely with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion to create safe spaces for dialogue and discussion.
The virtual event is free and open to all UNL students, staff and faculty. However, attendees must pre-register.
