Students meeting the following criteria are eligible to apply:
• Communication Studies major
• Junior or senior class standing
• Cumulative GPA of 3.25 or above
In addition to these criteria, recipients should demonstrate involvement in activities and/or leadership within the Department of Communication Studies. Students may also discuss activities and/or leadership in the College of Arts & Sciences, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and/or the local community. Special consideration to First Generation students although all students are encouraged to apply.
To apply, students should submit the following to Dr. Jordan Soliz (jsoliz2@unl.edu) by October 15th: (a) current resume, (b) a 1-2 page letter addressing how your experiences match the criteria listed above, (c) unofficial transcript, and (d) name and contact information for two references that can speak to your academic achievements, involvement in the aforementioned activities, and/or leadership in the department and/or university. 1-credit, weeklong, study abroad course designed for students interested in public affairs, government relations, political science, and public policy. Taught by Dr. Shari Veil, the course develops skills in public relations strategy, media relations, crisis management and an understanding of military and governmental policy interplay.
Highlights include planned visits to the US Embassies to Belgium and the European Union, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), European Union Council, as well as agencies and news bureaus specializing in public policy and government affairs. These experiences, along with guest lectures, case-based analyses and public communication exercises, will provide a comprehensive understanding of military public affairs and government relations. Estimated total student cost: $3500-$4500 - including travel, tuition & fees
