With a news operation completely ran by student journalists since 1901, the Daily Nebraskan innovated its video product during the 2024-25 school year with its Press Play project, which includes a live concert performed at the news organization’s office in the UNL City Campus Student Union. Local bands are invited by DN editors and play live at the DN’s office, and the end result is a video released on YouTube of the full concert, behind-the-scenes photos and videos of the band before and after the concert, a feature story on the band and other social media content.
The project has generated thousands of views on YouTube and increased subscribers to the channel to more than 600. The project has given reporters hands-on experience with cross-media journalism and storytelling, while also innovating cross-platform content by merging video with social and written digital content. It has ignited the staff and shown what community-based video content can do
The Daily Nebraskan is one of seven finalists for the award. The Pacemaker Award winners are announced at the National College Media Convention in Washington DC on October 18.
