Francesca Giganti is a Senior Communication Studies and Business Management double major.
How did you find Communication Studies?
A former teammate of mine boasted about being a Communication Studies major all of the time. She told me how useful it is, and how it can give you an advantage in any field. Well she was right! I struggled to find a major that I was drawn to, but after taking a semester of Communication Studies classes I knew it was the right fit.
What do you like most about being a Communication Studies major?
I love that I learn about a variety of ways communication plays a role in our everyday lives. Whether it is verbal or nonverbal communication, communicating through an argument, or even communicating about health, there is so much to learn to help facilitate messages being created and received effectively.
What is your favorite class?
It is hard to pick a favorite class, especially when every professor I've had has been able to make any topic interesting. I really enjoyed taking Health Communication. Not only did it teach me about the communication flaws throughout the healthcare systems, but it also educated me on the healthcare systems. This information has already proven to be extremely useful in my everyday life, and I was able to enlighten my partner on the importance of Health Communication, as he is a Pre-Med student.
What are some of the cool experiences you have had here at UNL?
I am a student-athlete for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and am involved in the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. I have also been an active volunteer in our community by speaking to elementary school kids, packaging food for the hungry, and visiting with an elderly widow, Connie at her retirement home. I am currently in the interviewing process for an internship with Northwestern Mutual.
What do you plan to do when you graduate?
Once I graduate, I hope to pursue a career in Sales. I plan to utilize my communication skills to effectively work with others. My dream is to land a career in Florida so I can escape the snow!
