Students working on tasks and objectives during a poverty simulation.

Last week, The Communication Studies Department partnered with UNL Honors Program to give students the unique opportunity to learn how to research and write about poverty and social justice. Throughout the day, faculty and volunteers led students through discussions pertaining to poverty and social justice issues. Students were even able to participate in a poverty simulation, facilitated by Leadership Lincoln, in which they were assigned a set of circumstances and asked to meet obligations and make ends meet over a period of 4 weeks. Following this simulation, students were given the opportunity to develop a research question around poverty informed by their experience in the simulation and their major/area of study. UNL Research Librarians then showed the students how to properly find articles and information to develop their research ideas, and reviewed how to structure a literature review. With guidance from faculty, librarians, and consultants from the UNL Writing Center, students worked through the process of writing and researching about poverty. Overall, we in the Communication Studies department were thrilled that our partnership with the UNL Honors Program in collaboration with UNL Libraries, UNL Writing Center, and community partner, Leadership Lincoln resulted in such an amazing event!
