Meet Communication Studies Major and CS Undergraduate Student Advisory Executive Team member, Mary Schultz! Mary is a Sophomore who is currently minoring in English and likely to add another minor.

How did you find Communication Studies?
I found communication studies through my advisor in the Explore Center of my freshman year. Coming into college I was undeclared and felt pretty lost when it came to what I wanted to do. My advisor in the Explore Center asked me to explain all the things I loved and found interesting when it came to school. She then gathered them all up and referenced me to talk with an advisor in the College of Arts and Sciences regarding Communication Studies and I instantly knew that was where I was meant to be.
What do you like most about being a Communication Studies major?
I love how many different courses there are to take as a Communication Studies major here at UNL! When time to enroll in classes comes around, the hardest part for me is deciding which ones I want to take when they all sound so interesting to me. There are so many course options and so many amazing professors who teach them, I have yet to take a communication course that I didn't thoroughly enjoy. I cannot wait to see what classes I end up taking for the second half of my college career!

What has been your favorite class in Communication?
So far, my favorite communication class(es) are Health in Communication and Interpersonal Communication, sorry I just can't pick one! I am currently in both this semester and I look forward to going to class and doing the readings for each day. We learn so many interesting things that can be applied to so many different areas in our personal lives. I cannot wait to see where these classes take me after the semester is over.

What cool experiences have you had at UNL?
Fall semester of this year, I was fortunate enough to get involved with and help create an Undergraduate Communication Advisory Board. I could not be more excited to be a part of this. This semester, our advisory board is hosting multiple events and I cannot wait for them to launch and be able to meet all the other Communication Studies majors/minors we have here on our campus! Coming to our events is a great opportunity to make this big campus feel a little bit smaller as well as learn all there is to Communication Studies here at UNL. I truly feel that with Communication Studies the possibilities are endless and I encourage everyone to come to at least one event!

What are your plans after graduation?
While I still have some time before graduation, as of right now I hope to get involved with the Children's Hospital back home in Minneapolis, MN post graduation. My ideal job would be to work with both doctors and their patients to help improve health communication. I am a strong believer that with the right communication, people can change the world for the better and health is a great place to start.
