What has your experience serving on the Communication Studies Undergraduate Advisory Board been like?
Being involved with the Communication Studies Undergraduate Student Advisory Board has provided me with leadership opportunities and is helping me develop team building skills and allowed me to develop relationships with our wonderful faculty in the department. As a board we have grown so much together over the course of this school year and I am so proud of our accomplishments. We are a great team and we are planning many exciting events that we hope will shine a spotlight on all that the Communication Studies Department can offer. We are excited about our first big event coming up so make sure to attend the Meet-N-Greet on Wednesday, March 27th from 1:30-3:00 in Gaughan 212 (Unity Room)! I am very excited to see what next year has in store for us.
How did you find Communication Studies?
When I was touring colleges as a high school junior, I became very overwhelmed by what seemed like an infinite amount of choices when it came to choosing a future course of study. I have varied interests and strengths and I struggled trying to choose a major that would best fit my interests. When I came to UNL I was able to speak with advisors who introduced me to the communication studies major. I can say with confidence that this was the best decision and I’m so excited about my future and all of the opportunities that are ahead over the next three years as I continue to explore all of the possibilities this major offers.
What do you like most about being a Communication Studies major?
I like that this major is so broad and future career possibilities are endless! I love that we are a smaller department compared to others which allows students to feel comfortable with the faculty and try out a variety of classes which allows you to find your niche and run with it within the major. I really feel like I have found my home here. I’ve learned so much already and I’ve only just begun!
What has been your favorite Communication class?
I am a freshman so my classes have been introductory, but I have to say that so far my favorite Communication class was COMM101: Communication in the 21st Century. We learned communication theory and how it helps us to think critically and communicate effectively. This class gave me a great overview of what to expect and look for in future classes. It made me excited to be a student in the communication studies department!
What cool experiences have you had at UNL?
I am from Long Island, New York and after visiting many schools all over the country I chose UNL over all the others because I knew I would have incredible opportunities here and I wanted to get as involved as possible with the whole college experience! I have joined greek life and am a proud member of Kappa Delta Sorority. I had the rewarding opportunity to work as a Campus Host which was an awesome way for me to learn about the campus and share my story by showing prospective students around this school that I love so much.
What are your plans after graduation?
Right now my goal after graduation is to obtain a job that will make use of my newly acquired skills! My ultimate goal is to work in an administrative position or as a guidance counselor within a high school. I know as a communication studies major, the possibilities are endless and it’s possible that somewhere along the way my career goal may change and take me on a different path. Whatever that may be, I know here at UNL I will grow and gain the confidence that I will need to work in a professional environment.
