Wifi upgrade to increase capacity, Oct 3, 7:00 a.m.
On Thursday, October 3 between 7:00 a.m. - 8:00 a.m., the network will be unavailable in all residence halls for approximately 15 minutes. UNL ITS is upgrading the network components to provide increased capacity on the network during peak periods. It will also allow for future growth.

Office 365 Tech Session, September 19
ITS will lead an "Office 365 - Where we are heading" session for campus IT staff on September 19, 11:30 to 1:00 p.m. in the Nebraska Union. Topics include:

Hansen named to voice messaging advisory council
Michael Hansen, ITS Voice Systems Administrator, was recently elected to the AVST Customer Advisory Council. AVST provides voicemail and unified messaging infrastructure for UNL's telephone system.

Lincoln Startup Weekend Sept. 6-8

Classroom Technology orientation sessions, August 21- 23
All instructors are invited to an orientation of technology services available in general purpose classrooms, including a hands-on walk-through of the actual equipment installed in the rooms. The final portion will be reserved for questions and support contact information.

GitLab Code Management now at UNL
GitLab, a source code management system for programmers and developers to collaborate effectively and securely is available at UNL. GitLab allows project repositories, easy project and team creation, internal ticketing, code reviews, wikis and merge requests.

Computer Help Center to benchmark performance
Information Technology Services has engaged HDI, an independent industry association, to randomly survey closed MySupport service tickets to better monitor customer satisfaction levels.

3D printing forum is today
Information Technology Services is hosting a 3D printing listening session at 11 a.m. today (Aug. 6) in the Nebraska Union (room posted). Feedback from the forum will be used to gauge interest in 3D printing technology. The session is open to all faculty and staff.

802.11b WiFi access discontinued August 17
UNL is disabling access for 802.11b devices on its wireless network, effective August 17. Devices using 802.11b or "B" are subject to greater interference and operate at much slower speeds, degrading WiFi performance for other devices on the network.

eduroam portable WiFi launching August 4
UNL students, faculty and staff will be able to use their MyUNL credentials to access WiFi service at participating institutions worldwide beginning August 4. eduroam (education roaming) is a secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community.

UNLcms moving to new host, August 2
All UNLcms websites will migrate to a new hosting service, ScaleMatrix on Friday August 2, 2013 starting at 6:00 pm through 6:00 p.m. Saturday. Sites will remain online during the move. All access to login and editing of sites will be temporarily disabled starting at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, August 2.

New Smartphone App Keeps Farmers and Ranchers in the Know
SNR's High Plains Regional Climate Center released its new smartphone app on May 22. The “Climate App” publishes maps that show recent highs, lows, and soil temperatures. It is intended to keep agricultural producers aware of the temperature ranges that could affect production timelines.

Instant messaging going mobile, system-wide, April 28
UNL's instant messaging users will be soon be able to collaborate via IM or video chat with colleagues on the other Nebraska system campuses using their computers or mobile devices.

Blackboard unavailable during upgrade, May 11
The MyUNL academic portal will receive an upgrade of its Blackboard system on Saturday, May 11 from 8:00 a.m to 8:00 p.m. All access to Blackboard will be unavailable during this window. Faculty will not have access to the grade center on May 11 during this time window.

Printing assessment begins for Business and Finance, Information Services
Business and Finance and Information Services are conducting an assessment of their departmental desktop printing to identify possible efficiencies and reduce overall costs. The month-long assessment started April 1 and was recommended in a cost-reducing report issued in June 2011.

Register for Employee Business and Tech training online
UNL employees can register for business, finance and technology training classes through a new website. Classes available include SAP, eSHOP, UNL business processes, Blackboard, Microsoft Office and Adobe.

Entrepreneurial UNL Startup Weekend, March 8-10
Developers, designers, marketers, product managers and startup enthusiasts are invited to collaborate in UNL Startup Weekend, March 8-10 in Avery Hall. Through hands-on workshops, participants will learn to put entrepreneurial ideas into action.

Beware of Fraudulent Telecom Invoices
Recently, some University of Nebraska-Lincoln departmental units have received fraudulent telecom maintenance "invoices" via the U.S. Mail from UST Telecom that in reality, are solicitations for business. UST is NOT an authorized vendor for the University of Nebraska. Do NOT pay this "invoice".

HIVE offers creative contest Feb. 16
HIVE, a new technology collaborative group, is hosting an advertising design competition, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 16 in Architecture Hall. Participants will develop creative campaigns for real clients. Prizes will be awarded. The event is open to faculty, staff and students.

UNL voicemail will be unavailable from noon to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 16 due to a system upgrade. After 2:30 p.m., callers will be able to leave new messages. Voicemail users will have limited access to retrieve messages through midnight.

Firefly accessible via Windows 8 devices
UNL employees can now use Windows 8 devices to access the Firefly business portal. SAP has announced support for Windows 8 and Internet Explorer 10, with certain limitations.

Windows 8 orientation sessions begin Feb. 6
A series of Microsoft Windows 8 workshops for faculty and staff begins Feb. 6. Sessions in the Nebraska Union are 12:30 p.m. Feb. 6 and 9:30 a.m. Feb. 21. Sessions in the East Union are 12:30 p.m. Feb. 7 and 9:30 a.m. Feb. 20.

Voicemail system outages planned for Jan. 19
Due to system upgrades, UNL voicemail will be unavailable 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Jan. 19. After 9:30 a.m., callers will be able to leave new messages. Voicemail users will have limited access to retrieve messages through 8 p.m. Some UNL units will experience an extended outage from 2 to 5 p.m.

Disable Java web browser plug-ins
UNL Information Services continues to recommend that all computer users disable the Java web browser plug-in on any computer. U.S. Homeland Security is warning that even most recent Java software updates do not protect computer users from hackers. Java is installed an estimated 1 billion computers.

HIVE Spring Kickoff Jan. 16
HIVE is holding a spring semester kickoff event, 3:30 to 4 p.m., Jan. 16 in the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center's Ubuntu Room. The event is open to faculty, staff, students and the public. HIVE is a group designed to help students become better professionals.

Data Center, Blackboard upgrades over holiday closedown
The UNL data center, Blackboard and other online systems will receive upgrades and conduct testing during the holiday closedown. Selected systems will be unavailable while the work is being performed.
Free Blackboard training available for instructors
Information Services is offering free Blackboard training to campus instructors on Jan. 4. The Power Classroom Training Sessions include "Getting Started with Blackboard," "Grade Center Basics and Using Assignments" and "Tests, Surveys and Pools." The sessions are in Architecture Hall, room 107.

HIVE faculty/staff partnering session is Nov. 30
A faculty/staff partnering session about HIVE, a new student-led organization linking students with faculty and area businesses through technology, is 4:30 p.m. Nov. 30 in the Nebraska Union.

Windows 8, Office 2013 preview is today
A preview of new Windows 8 and Office 2013 products is 1:30 to 3 p.m. today in the Nebraska Union. Ranelle Maltas, technology training services manager for Information Services, will lead the session. Maltas will discuss the new features of Windows 8 and updates in the new Office suite.
Windows 8 not supported for Open Enrollment
UNL employees accessing Benefits Open Enrollment through the Firefly portal may not use the new Windows 8 operating system and Internet Explorer 10 web browser. This operating system and browser will not work with Firefly or SAP. Open Enrollment begins Nov. 19 and runs through Dec. 7.
