The Firefly business portal is available at http://firefly.nebraska.edu.

Check web browser before NUFlex enrollment begins Nov. 14

The 2012 NUFlex benefit open enrollment and health risk assessment starts Nov. 14 and runs through Dec. 2. UNL faculty and staff must use Firefly, NU's business portal, to update benefit selections. Some versions of internet browsers are not supported by Firefly and may cause problems.

UNL offers new anti-virus program at no charge

UNL has licensed Symantec Endpoint Protection as the new campus anti-virus solution. The software is available at no charge for use on all university and personally-owned computers. All students, faculty and staff should download the anti-virus for installation on personal computers by Dec. 30.

Help sessions offered for Blackboard migration

Help sessions for faculty needing to migrate old course content to the current MyUNL Blackboard environment will be held throughout October on City and East campuses. After Nov. 1, courses prior to and including those in spring 2011 will no longer be available online.

501 Phone Shop grand opening is today

A grand opening of the new Computer and Phone Shop in the 501 Building is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., today. The event includes free refreshments and special offers on phones and related accessories. The new phone location replaces the Nebraska Hall phone shop.

UNL recently joined GigU, the University Community Next Generation Innovation Project. GigU is a nationwide group of universities and research institutions working to accelerate the deployment of ultra-high-speed connectivity to the nation’s leading research universities and surrounding communities.

Workshop offers info to help prepare for new email system

Information about how faculty and staff can prepare for UNL's new email system will be presented in an Information Services workshop. The free, one-hour workshop, "Email Best Practices — Preparing for Migration," is offered Sept. 23 and 29 on East Campus, and Sept. 27 and 28 on City Campus.

Mathematica computational software download available

Mathematica, a computational software package, is now available as a free download for students, faculty and staff for individually-owned personal computers. Licenses are available to departments for a reduced fee, to install on university-owned computers.

Computer Help Center updates hours, adds tools

Faster response to student and faculty questions is the reason the Computer Help Center is deploying new tools and realigning office hours. Starting Sept. 11, the CHC will be open 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Monday to Friday; and noon to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Off-hours calls will also be answered.

Fix under way for Blackboard software glitch

A software glitch in Blackboard was discovered that may prevent students from accessing course content. This error occurs when an instructor copies content from a previous course to his or her fall 2011 course.

Kuali Ready to help UNL recover from unplanned events

UNL has subscribed to Kuali Ready, a disaster recovery and business continuity tool. It is a product of the Kuali Foundation, an administrative software cooperative for higher education. More than 50 international institutions subscribe to the service.

Campus logins now work with some external organizations

Through a membership with the InCommon Federation, UNL is among the first group of higher ed institutions granted access to the NSF's online resources. The membership also allows faculty and staff to use My.UNL credentials to use the NSF sites and those of other external organizations.

New classroom 'clickers' picked for fall semester

UNL will open the fall semester with a new classroom "clicker" system. The new student response system, iClicker2, allows instructors to poll students on the fly, with results uploaded to Blackboard in one click. The new system is portable and can be used in any classroom.

Voicemail services unavailable during upgrade

UNL Voicemail, auto attendant and fax-to-email services will be unavailable during two evening periods Aug. 2-3. These systems are being upgraded to a higher availability system.

UNL websites transition to UNLcms

Information Services is working with campus units to migrate web pages from the Frontier server to UNLcms. Frontier, UNL’s main web host server, is being retired. All content on Frontier must be migrated to UNLcms if it is to remain available after June 30, 2012.

Struwe to retire after 29 years of service

Peggy Struwe, an assistant director in Information Services, will retire June 3. Struwe began her career at the University of Nebraska in 1982 as a programmer for the student information system under NU Central Administration. Colleagues may send well-wishes to Struwe at pstruwe1@unl.edu.

UNL faculty, staff and student laptops can now access the Internet via a secure wireless network while on campus. The new network, UNL-AIR-E, offers an encrypted signal that safeguards against unauthorized third-party access.
