New Online Sections of Computer Science I in Fall 2020

The Department of Computer Science’s online offers are set to expand this coming fall. For quite some time, it has successfully offered CSCE 101 online which is an introduction to computing for a general audience. It is intended for non-majors and prospective CSCE majors and provides an approachable introduction to computing and problem solving using the Python programming language. It fulfills an ACE 3 requirement and will give students a good foundation for other computing courses if they choose or it can serve as a terminal computing course.

Starting this fall, the department will also be offering its flagship Computer Science I course, CSCE 155E both in a traditional face-to-face setting as well as fully online sections. Two sections have been established, a 700 section (so no on-campus testing is required) and an 800 section for high school students in the Nebraska Now program. CSCE 155E is a full, rigorous Computer Science I course and the first course taken by most Computer Science and Computer Engineering majors. However, nearly half the students who take this course are from a huge variety of other majors. This course does not assume any prior experience and has no prerequisite (other than UNL entrance requirements). However, the department does recommend that Nebraska Now students take CSCE 101 prior to this course.

CSCE 155E provides a challenging and rigorous introduction to computing using the C programming language. There are dozens of online resources that have been developed and are provided to students including over 50 video tutorials and demonstrations, a free online text book (an additional online interactive textbook is required but at a relatively inexpensive cost of around $60) and livestreamed lectures. This course also utilizes the department’s Learning Assistant program which provides a large team of peer Learning Assistants who help with labs and hack sessions, tutor and hold online office hours using Zoom.
