Open to all students, no matter their major, both undergraduate and graduate, GLST 415/815 will give students practical hands on skills in grant writing and fundraising. The course will examine history, tradition and current state of philanthropy and charitable giving in the United States and globally. Since philanthropy is a foundational to running and operation of nonprofit, nongovernmental and other social impact organizations, the course will give students techniques and strategies for developing and sustaining the resource base of these same organizations. The course emphasizes resource development and the effective management of resources within organizations. This course is designed for current or aspiring social impact organization employees managers and professional staff, and volunteers in the social impact sector who want to become familiar with the fundamentals of grant writing, philanthropy, and fundraising.
Topics will include: an overview of grant writing, fundraising, and philanthropy and its importance in today’s world. The course will also focus on characteristics of nonprofit organizations and their differing fundraising needs and systems; motivations for giving; ethical concerns; prospect research; types of funding sources; planning; capital campaigns; annual giving; communications; grant proposal writing; solicitation techniques; the increasing impact of global philanthropy; and Internet fundraising.
