Sociology Reserach Opportunity: Sustainability and Food Systems

Message from Dr. Julia McQuillan:

Dear Students,
My name is Julia McQuillan and I am a Sociology professor.
I’m working on a new project in collaboration with Engineers, Computer scientists, Anthropologists, Journalists, etc. that is exploring human perceptions of emerging food technology.
I’m looking for students who might be interested in some basic projects this fall, for example:
1. Searching for research on innovations in technology and food that have been widely adopted (e.g. iphones, energy drinks) or have not been adopted even with solid science that they would be safe and helpful (e.g. golden rice) and creating an annotated bibliography of this research and coding for specific dimensions (e.g. theoretical perspective, methodological perspective, major findings, data sources, date of research, etc.
2. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression analyses of survey data on perceptions of co-robotic work, cultured proteins, and 3d printed food – including creating charts and figures in excel.

If this is an area that you would like to explore, you might want to first see a recent report that describes the kinds of disruptions in food technology that this project will be exploring:
https://www.rethinkx.com/press-release/2019/9/16/new-report-major-disruption-in-food-and-agriculture-in-next-decade

If you would like to explore working on this project this fall – e.g. as a ustar https://soc.unl.edu/undergraduate-research-opportunities, to craft a UCARE, as a class project, or in some other way, please write to jmcquillan2@unl.edu and sociology@unl.edu to describe your interests and availability.

This opportunity is available to students at any level (freshman to advanced graduate student).

Sincerely,

Julia McQuillan, Ph.D. Willa Cather Professor & Chair of Sociology
