Now Hiring: Archaeology Collection Interns

Come work for the National Park Service in lovely Northern New Mexico! Pecos National Historical Park is home to Pecos Pueblo where renowned archaeologist, Alfred V. Kidder, conducted his seminal fieldwork. The park has a backlog of approximately 33,000 uncataloged artifacts collected during archaeological testing and excavation over the past 50 years. We are looking for a self-motivated intern with a solid background in archaeology, or a solid background in museum studies having experience with archaeological collections, to identify and catalog artifacts. Items were collected primarily from Pecos Pueblo and our Spanish Mission Complex, but also come from Civil War and Santa Fe Trail contexts. Artifacts include pottery sherds, stone tools, worked lithics, metal objects, ammunition, adobe samples, and faunal remains. You will work with the park’s museum curator and another SCA intern on a daily basis, with guidance from the park’s archaeologists as needed. Attention to detail is a must! Education experience in archaeology or museum studies are the crux to this position.

Duties Include:
-Identify artifacts from archaeological contexts.
-Research associated field records, reports, and maps to complete required fields in catalog records.
-Enter catalog data into spreadsheets.
-Apply catalog numbers to artifacts.
-Photograph significant artifacts.
-Rehouse artifacts and prepare for storage.
The workweek will be Monday through Friday, 8 hours per day. This position requires the ability to lift 40 pounds and entails long-periods of sitting each day. This position is ideal for detail-oriented people who like organizing materials and creating thorough and consistent records.
