VISITOR SERVICE ASSOCIATE
Sheldon Museum of Art is seeking student applicants who are enthusiastic with a passion and knowledge of art to serve as Visitor Service Associate for the Sheldon Museum of Art. The Visitor Service Associate is responsible for providing a welcoming and safe environment for visitors to the museum. Individuals will share their enthusiasm and knowledge of art with visitors, provide coverage of the front desk, monitor museum galleries and assist visitors needs during public hours. Help security personnel to maintain the security of guests, the collection and building. Visitor Service Associate will also assist with set-up and tear-down of events and serve as event ambassador. Successful candidate must possess enthusiastic customer service, excellent communication skills, and have a general knowledge and appreciation of art/art history. $11/hour, 10-12 hours per week. Job Description:
Sheldon Student Docents facilitate inquiry-based tours and guided conversations, primarily for K–12 students and occasionally for university students and other visitors, about Sheldon Museum of Art’s collection and exhibitions. This includes “Sculpture in Context,” a Lincoln Public Schools program for students in the fifth grade. In this challenging but rewarding position, students can hone their creative teaching practice as they bring their unique interests, personalities, and backgrounds to their work.
Sheldon Student Docents work with Sheldon’s Engagement Department and are supported by extensive training and mentoring, balanced with hands-on experience in looking at, thinking about, discussing, and engaging with art and diverse audiences.
Sheldon Student Docents are expected to commit to being a docent for one full academic year.
Responsibilities:
• Lead 60-minute tours of Sheldon’s outdoor sculpture for LPS fifth graders as part of the "Sculpture in Context” program
• Develop and lead 30- to 60-minute inquiry-based tours of Sheldon’s exhibitions for diverse K-12 students, university students, and other visitors
• Provide an inclusive and accessible educational experience for every visitor
• Participate in weekly training/tour preparation and practice sessions
• Represent Sheldon and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in a professional manner
Minimum Qualifications:
• Applicants must be currently enrolled students at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in good academic standing and have completed at least two semesters of college
• Interest in art, museums, teaching, and learning
• Willingness to speak in front of, to listen to, and to engage in respectful dialogue with visitors, individually and in groups
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and to be flexible with responsibilities, as plans sometimes change at the last minute or even during a tour
Preferred Qualifications:
• Familiarity with K-12 teaching methodologies, art history, studio art, and/or material culture
• Bi- or multi-lingual speakers are strongly encouraged to apply
Hours:
Sheldon Student Docents will primarily work Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings, between 9 am–12 pm. There may be additional opportunities to work outside of these hours when Sheldon is open to the public (Tuesday–Saturday 10 am–4 pm, First Fridays until 7 pm). See below for more details.
