At its core, ARTP381- Gallery Management provides opportunities to learn a variety of hands-on, gallery-based skills that are invaluable. Students gain a general knowledge of art handling, installation/de-installation, condition reporting, lighting, vinyl application, public relations, and shipping/receiving. Students also learn about the gallery world and its ever-changing components including the role of the artist, gallerists, curators, types of galleries, preparators, the difference between a gallery and a museum, art fairs, the art market, art critics, etc. There will be a few, local, field trips to get a behind-the scenes perspective on some of these roles in our local arts community. These trips really help the students to see how the knowledge and skill sets they are learning in the course translate into viable carriers. The course concludes with the curation of individual virtual exhibitions. Sometimes this experience inspires the students to actually make these shows happen, and that is exciting!!!
ARTP381 meets each Tuesday and Thursday form 6PM to 8:50PM. Students can email the Eisentrager•Howard Gallery Director, Patricia Davis with questions. patricia.davis@unl.edu
