The UNL Symphony Orchestra presents a concert titled “Holiday in Vienna” on Friday, Dec. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in O’Donnell Auditorium at Nebraska Wesleyan University. The concert is free and open to the public.
The UNL Symphony Orchestra is under the direction of Tyler White, Professor of Conducting and Composition and Director of Orchestras.
“Our concert is designed to evoke the spirit, grace and verve of life in Vienna during the Austrian capital’s glory days of the 19th and early 20th centuries,” White said.
The program begins with Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92.”
“We begin with one of Beethoven’s most dynamic and popular works, the Symphony No. 7 in A major,” White said.
Next on the program is “The Waltz King” Johann Strauss II’s “Overture to ‘Der Zigeunerbaron,’” which White said “reflects the multicultural energies of Vienna as capital of a polyglot empire.”
The program concludes with Richard Strauss’ Suite from “Der Rosenkavalier, Op. 49,” arranged by Artur Rodzinski.
“The Suite from Richard Strauss’s beloved opera Der Rosenkavalier contains some of the most lyrical, soaring, and radiant music of the entire operatic/orchestral canon,” White said. “Bring your dancing shoes for this holiday extravaganza.”
The 80-member UNL Symphony Orchestra, Nebraska’s oldest orchestral organization, is made up of students from across the university. The UNL Symphony maintains a national reputation for excellence, recognized by invitations to perform at national and regional conventions of music educators, and by four awards from the National Opera Association.
