• Oct. 25: Opening reception for "Cannonball," a solo exhibition of paintings by Professor of Art Aaron Holz. 6-9 p.m. Kiechel Fine Art, 1208 O St. in Lincoln.

• Oct. 25: Haunted House. 7:30 p.m. Architecture Hall. $2 per person, cash only. Nebraska Masquers and the American Institute of Architecture students are teaming up to bring a haunted house to Architecture Hall for one night only. Bring your friends and get spooked.

• Oct. 26: Guest Artist: Bob Sheppard with University Jazz Faculty. 7:30 p.m. Westbrook Music Building Rm. 119. Free and open to the public. Presented in partnership with the University Saxophone Studio and Chateau Development, L.L.C.

• Oct. 26: Alloy Orchestra. 7:30 p.m. Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center. Tickets: $25 general admission, $20 seniors, $15 students/members and $5 for UNL SCC, Nebraska Wesleyan and Union College students. The world-renowned Alloy Orchestra returns to The Ross to perform their live, original accompaniment for the 1923 French silent film "Couer Fidèle" (The Faithful Heart) directed by Jean Epstein. • Oct. 29: Nebraska Trombone Ensemble. 7 p.m. Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2110 Sheridan Blvd. Free and open to the public. The Nebraska Trombone Ensemble, comprised of trombone students in the Glenn Korff School of Music, will perform works by composers ranging from Morten Lauridsen to Frank Zappa and Derek Bourgeois.

• Oct. 31: Hixson-Lied Visiting Scholar Lecture: Jeff Fontana. 5:30 p.m. Richards Hall Rm. 15. Free and open to the public. Fontana is associate professor and Harry E. Smith Distinguished Teaching Professor in Art History at Austin College in Sherman, Texas, where he is currently chair of the Art and Art History Department. An Italian Renaissance scholar by training, he focuses on the career of the painter Federico Barocci, on whose work he has published articles and acted as an exhibition consultant.

• Nov. 2 & 4: University Opera presents "The Return of Ulysses." Performances are Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 4 at 3 p.m. Kimball Recital Hall. Tickets: $20 adults and $10 seniors/students. For advance tickets, contact the Lied Center Box Office at (402) 472-4747. Ulysses is one of the greatest love stories ever told. Based on Homer’s mythic Odyssey, the opera, "The Return of Ulysses" (Claudio Monteverdi) is a timeless testament to the power of a faithful heart. University Opera presents a new adaptation of the work, sung in English.

• Nov. 2-15: MEDICI Exhibition. Eisentrager-Howard Gallery. A First Friday reception will be held on Friday, Nov. 2 from 5-7 p.m. in the gallery. The MEDICI fund-raising event is Thursday, Nov. 15. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 12:30-4:30 p.m. Admission to the gallery is free and open to the public.

• Nov. 4: Moran Woodwind Quintet. 7:30 p.m. Westbrook Recital Hall Rm. 119. Free. This concert will also be live webcast. The concert will feature the premiere of a new woodwind quintet by California bassoonist and composer John Steinmetz titled "All the Difference." The work was commissioned by the Glenn Korff School of Music.

• Nov. 5: Flyover New Music Series. 7:30 p.m. Westbrook Recital Hall Rm. 119. Free. This concert will also be live webcast. The Flyover New Music Series is the new music series from the composition studio at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Glenn Korff School of Music. The series is administered and overseen by composition faculty and students.

• Nov. 7: Hixson-Lied Visiting Artist Lecture: Kim Dickey & Simon Levin, ceramics. 5:30 p.m. Richards Hall Rm. 15. Free. With support from the UNL Clay Club, Dickey and Levin will participate in demonstrations Nov. 7-10, in addition to their consecutive public lectures on Nov. 7.

• Nov. 7-18: Nebraska Repertory Theatre presents "Mother Courage." Temple Building. For tickets and showtimes, visit http://nebraskarep.org. By Bertolt Brecht. Music by Scott Lamps. Book and lyrics by Andy Park. Translation by William Grange. Directed by Andy Park. Music Director: Tobi Mattingly. Follow the fortunes of Mother Courage and her three children as they strive to make a living during the madness of war. In this new adaptation of the classic play, the drama unfolds during the height of the American Civil War. While Mother Courage profits from the spoils of war, she faces the ultimate sacrifice in this epic masterpiece of struggle and survival.

• Nov. 11: Faculty Recital: Jamie Reimer, soprano. 3 p.m. Kimball Recital Hall. Free. Reimer has performed in opera, oratorio and recital venues around the United States, Italy, Germany, Brazil, and Australia. With a particular interest in contemporary American art song, Reimer’s research focuses on the life and work of composer Robert Owens.

• Nov. 11: Guest Artist: Scott Watkins, piano. 3 p.m. Westbrook Recital Hall Rm. 119. Free. Watkins is professor of piano at Jacksonville University and has appeared as a recitalist, chamber musician and soloist with orchestras in more than 30 countries around the world.

• Nov. 14: Hixson-Lied Visiting Artist: Lynne Avadenka, printmaking. 5:30 p.m. Richards Hall Rm. 15. Free. Avadenka is an American artist and printmaker who creates multimedia work informed by explorations of text, image and
the Jewish experience. Avadenka received a Kresge Fellowship in 2009, and has received individual artist grants from The National Endowment for the Arts and The Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. Avadenka’s work is exhibited and collected internationally at The Israel Museum, Jerusalem; The Hague, The Netherlands; and The British Library, London; as well as at The Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.; The New York Public Library; and The Watson Library at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

This concert showcases three of the Glenn Korff School of Music brass ensembles: The Trumpet Ensemble, directed by Dr. Darryl White; the Husker Horn Choir, directed by Dr. Alan Mattingly; and the Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble, directed by Professor Craig Fuller.

• Nov. 28: UNL/LPS String Project. 6 p.m. Park Middle School in Lincoln. The String Project is an after-school teacher-training program that gives children the opportunity to begin playing a stringed instrument before they start playing in their school.

• Nov. 29: Cornhusker Marching Band Highlights Concert. 7:30 p.m. Lied Center for Performing Arts. Tickets are $20 adults and $10 seniors/students.
