Spring is here and with it, the threat of severe weather. The main threats in Nebraska from severe weather include tornadoes, large hail, damaging thunderstorm winds, and flash flooding. In a weather emergency, being prepared to act quickly could be a matter of survival. This is especially true during the threat of severe weather.

UNL alerts will help to keep you informed of threatening weather. Following a reputable news source, such as the National Weather Service, local news/radio stations, or using a weather radio are also useful resources when it comes to weather.

Remember!

Tornado Watch
This means that conditions are favorable for tornadoes to form. Be alert to weather conditions and announcements.

Tornado Warning
This means that a tornado has been sighted or radar indicates rotation in the clouds. Find a shelter immediately!

Safety Procedures

Indoors
Move quickly to the tornado shelters. In the Sharp Building, that would be the basement. In other buildings look for signs or posters near elevators and entrances for shelter instruction.
Do not use elevators, if possible.
Stay away from windows
If a tornado strikes, help avoid telephone overloads. Do not use telephones (including cell phones) except for an emergency.

Outdoors
Seek an indoor shelter if possible.
Parked motor vehicles are unsafe. Seek an indoor shelter.
If an indoor shelter is not available and there is not time for escape, lie flat in a ditch or low spot.
If you are on flat ground and are caught in the path of a tornado, always move at right angles to its path.
