Seminar Title: Just different types of stories: quantitative, qualitative and narrative method in ADHD research

Abstract: There was a time, not so long ago, when doctoral candidates who aspired to use qualitative research had to not only detail their methodology, but also their epistemology. Things have changed. Now qualitative research is widely accepted and there is a growing body of work in the field of narrative inquiry. Further, there is greater appreciation of mixed method approaches, both within research studies and across careers. This presentation will recount a fifteen year journey that has come to incorporate narrative as part of a mixed method approach to examining Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In particular, it will note the different epistemological foundation of narrative and its implications for knowledge creation, analysis and ethics, as well as opportunities that narrative provides for research translation and policy impact.
