The Nebraska Association of Teachers of Science recognized him with their Catalyst Award at the group’s fall conference Sept. 27 at Camp Calvin Crest near Fremont, NE. Pedersen, a former science teacher at Lincoln Southeast High School and past president of NATS, has been a longtime member of the group. The Catalyst Award recognizes “contributions to science education in Nebraska.”

Earlier this year, Pedersen was presented with the 2013 Alumni Achievement Award from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Alumni Association. The Alumni Achievement Award recognizes a CASNR graduate who has “exhibited exemplary service to the College or to Nebraska agricultural and natural resources.” Pedersen, a native of Fremont, was a CASNR graduate and later earned his master’s and Ph.D. from the College of Education and Human Sciences. In his current role with CEHS, he has collaborated with CASNR on a project to use the soybean system as a model system for teaching science in elementary classrooms in Nebraska and Kansas.
