Samuel J. Meisels, executive director of the Buffett Early Childhood Institute at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, will be the featured speaker during the Helen Kelley Symposium for Excellence in Education, 1-5 p.m., Nov. 11 at the UNL East Campus Union. Hosted by the Department of Child, Youth and Family Studies in the College of Education and Human Sciences, the symposium will explore a trend of accountability measures for early childhood education programs that focus on “high stakes” testing.

Meisels will use the Head Start National Reporting System as an example of high stakes early childhood testing and, as an alternative, will also look at observational assessment. The presentation will focus on the importance of developing context-rich, responsive assessments that reflect children's complex learning patterns, conform to rigorous standards, and represent valid and meaningful ways of evaluating children's learning.

Breakout sessions at 3 p.m. will give participants the option of further discussion on the following topics:
· Teacher preparation
· Children’s experience in the classroom
· Policy implications
· Research
