Scott Baier, a PhD candidate in Dr. Janos Zempleni’s lab in the Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences, has been selected as one of 12 finalists for the American Society for Nutrition’s Graduate Student Research Awards Competition. Scott will present his abstract, “MicroRNAs in bovine milk are bioavailable in healthy adults and down-regulate reporter gene activity in human kidney HEK-293 cell cultures,” at an oral competition during the ASN’s Scientific Sessions and Annual Meeting at the Experimental Biology 2014 conference this April in San Diego, CA.

Scott has received a $750 travel award to attend the conference. From the 12 finalists, three winners will be selected by a panel of judges for an additional award and the all finalists will be recognized during the ASN’s Awards Ceremony at the end of this international conference that will be attended by more than 10,000 scientists.

This is the second time in two years that a graduate student from NHS has received this prestigious honor.
