Museums and galleries on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus are kicking off the new school year with special programming for First Friday on Sept. 4.
First Friday Artwalks are held on the first Friday of each month in downtown Lincoln. Admission to these exhibitions and events is free on UNL’s City and East campuses.
Great Plains Art Museum
1155 Q St. (City Campus)
5-7 p.m.
Opening reception for "We Are Star People: The Art and Poetry of Gwen Westerman." Join the museum and Westerman herself for a free reception for this new exhibition, which opened Sept. 1. Westerman will give a gallery talk at 6 p.m.
Westerman is the 2014 Contemporary Indigeneity Exhibition Prize winner and the exhibition features unique quilts and textiles alongside poetry inspired by personal connections to her Dakota family history.

“Revolutionary Grain” by Suzun Lucia Lamaina, "Social Cause Posters" by Justin Kemerling and “Radical Underground Newspapers” by Billy X Jennings, exhibits part of the Design & Social Justice Symposium, will be open.
This exhibition and program is available on the second floor of Love Library from 5 – 7 p.m.

The International Quilt Study Center & Museum will open its newest exhibition, “African-American Quilts from the Cargo Collection,” on Sept. 4, with a reception and lecture by author and collector Roderick Kiracofe at 5:30 p.m.
Kiracofe is the author of “Unconventional & Unexpected: American Quilts Below the Radar 1950-2000,” which explores contemporary attitudes and artistic strategies that are exchanged between quiltmaking and art practices. He will sign copies of his book in the Museum Shop at 4:30 p.m.
The International Quilt Study Center & Museum houses the world’s largest publicly held quilt collection. Quilts and related ephemera date from the early 1700s to the present and represent more than 40 countries. For more information visit http://www.quiltstudy.org.

Sheldon will offer extended hours for First Friday to showcase the museum’s new permanent exhibition from 5-7 p.m.
