The International Quilt Study Center & Museum will open “Contemporary Quilt Art from the International Quilt Festival Collection” on Nov. 4, with a reception from 4:30-7 p.m. In addition to free admission and refreshments, the celebration will include a lecture from guest curator Sandra Sider at 5:30 p.m.

The International Quilt Festival Collection, assembled by collectors and Quilts, Inc. founders Karey Bresenhan and Nancy O’Bryant Puentes, includes national award-winning works made by well-known artists working in the studio quilt movement from its earliest days, as well as emerging artists who have begun working in quilts as an art form more recently.

The selections in the Quilt House debut of “Contemporary Quilt Art from the International Quilt Festival Collection” feature commissioned works along with pieces showcased at the International Quilt Festival’s annual exhibitions in Houston. The exhibition is organized by Sider.

Sider has served as Curator for the Texas Quilt Museum in La Grange since 2011. She is a past president of Studio Art Quilt Associates and has authored numerous books and articles pertaining to the history and aesthetics of contemporary quilt art. She holds a Master of Arts degree in art history from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, and is acting editor for Art Quilt Collector magazine. She resides in New York City, working for the museum from her Bronx studio and occasionally traveling to La Grange.

Her Nov. 4 lecture for the International Quilt Study Center & Museum stems from her recent research on art quilts owned by public institutions.
