Exhibition Case: Bhutan: A Culture Woven through Textiles

Student Designed Exhibition of Bhutanese Textiles from the Dept. of Textiles, Merchandising & Fashion Design Historic Costume and Textiles Collection. On the second floor hallway of the Home Economics Building. Now through May 1, 2018. Free and Open to the Public.

For the TMFD graduate course, Museums: Theory and Practice, students researched and designed an exhibition featuring objects from a recent donation of Bhutanese textiles to the TMFD Historic Costume and Textiles Collection.

The Kingdom of Bhutan, called “the Land of the Thunder Dragon” by the Bhutanese, is a mountainous country in the Himalayas, sandwiched between China and India. Textiles are an integral part of Bhutanese culture, religion, and economy. This exhibit displays some of the traditional clothing and accessories worn in Bhutan, focusing on the elements of "national dress" (formalized in a 1989 royal decree), the meanings of key symbols in Bhutanese weaving, and the role of dress and textiles in conveying social status and regional identity.
