Loukia Sarroub, professor of teaching, learning and teacher education, was featured in a June 22 article in “The Weekly Standard.” The article described child marriages among the Yemeni-American community in Dearborn, Michigan. Sarroub’s book, “All American Yemeni Girls: Being Muslim in a Public School,” was mentioned in the article. She conducted research interviews with young women in the Dearborn Yemeni community and has since seen more of these women finish high school and attend college. Education, Sarroub says, is the vehicle that allows Yemeni women to have more choice in their lives, which in turn is making cultural change in the Yemeni community with each generation. Recently, her research has focused on middle and high school youth, including those from Iraq, Yemen and Syria, and how they “make it” in and out of school. Sarroub’s research interests include literacy, language and culture; linguistic anthropology; anthropology and education; cross-cultural studies; immigrant communities in the U.S. and Europe; ethnicity and gender in education; and education policy and social analysis.
