United Nations of Nebraska - Hike to Help Refugees!

United Nations of Nebraska (UNA) supports the United Nations efforts in peacekeeping, development and human rights, affiliated with the United Nations Association of the USA, a program of the United Nations Foundation. The Nebraska Division (now Chapter) was founded in 1957 under the leadership of Bertha Sellers.

One of the programs which the UNA facilitates is the Hike to Help Refugees which is headquartered in Glenwood, IA, and has been active in Nebraska and Iowa since 2002 and has raised $100,000 both within the Midwest and around North America to support the work of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, specifically using this money to provide the tents which are the living places for refugees around the world.

The Nebraska Chapter of UNA-USA has connected with this group and will aid the Hike to Help Refugees organizers in planning hikes based on the group’s principles and purposes. The major hikes sponsored by the group have used the Wabash Trace for treks. The hikes take place on Saturdays and Sundays to complete part of the trail and also offer those who commit to a week of hiking the opportunity to cover the whole trail.

The UNA is potentially seeking up to 5 student volunteers to assist in coordinating the hike itself in July. The tasks and responsibilities would include assistance in: organizing, publicity, fundraising, and participation in the hike itself.
