Nebraska Research Days will feature a Faculty Research and Creative Activity Slam at the Wick Alumni Center on Tuesday, Nov. 2, 4-6 p.m. Faculty from all disciplines are invited to submit short video proposals by Monday, Oct. 11 for an opportunity to present during the event.
The Slam offers faculty a platform to communicate with peers about their research, scholarship or creative activity through rapid-fire talks that are entertaining and easy to understand. Faculty selected to present during the Slam will have five minutes to engage the audience.
Following the presentations, the audience will vote to determine a winner.
The deadline to submit a video proposal is 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11. Applicants selected as semi-finalists will be invited to participate in an exclusive media skills training on Friday, Oct. 15, and the Slam finalists will be announced on Tuesday, Oct. 19.
Slam topic
Those interested in presenting during the Slam should submit a video proposal addressing this question: In what ways does your research, scholarship or creative activity connect with one or more of UNL's Grand Challenges themes?
Video proposal
The Slam has two stages: 1) pre-selection, in which candidates submit a 60-second video of themselves summarizing their topic in a creative and entertaining way; and 2) the finals, in which selected faculty present their talks to a live audience in under five minutes.
If you are interested in participating in the Research and Creative Activity Slam, upload a 60-second video sharing your idea. A review committee organized by the Office of Research and Economic Development will select contestants based on content, creativity and engagement with the theme.
The video proposals will be captured via Flipgrid. Access the site by clicking on this link: https://flipgrid.com/neresearch. If you wish to download the Flipgrid app on your phone or tablet, use the code neresearch to access the page. You do not need video equipment to film your short video; a cell phone or laptop webcam works fine.
Prizes
Semi-finalists will be invited to participate in an exclusive media skills training on Oct. 15. Those selected as finalists will each receive a generous swag bag in addition to the chance to present at the Faculty Slam on Nov. 2. The winner of the Slam will receive $1,000 that may be used to advance their research, scholarship or creative activity.
Rules
If you are chosen to present during Nebraska Research Days, follow these guidelines for your presentation:
- Limit the presentation to five minutes.
- The use of visual aids (e.g., slides) or prerecorded materials is not permitted.
- The audience will determine the winner based on three judging criteria: quality of content, clarity of presentation and ability to relate with the audience.
