Mark Wilkins, professor of biological systems engineering and food science and technology at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, has been named Nebraska Corn Checkoff Presidential Chair. The Nebraska Corn Board made a $2 million commitment to the University of Nebraska Foundation in 2014 to establish the permanently endowed chair. The endowment provides annual support to the university's Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources for research and development related to corn demand.

Chungwook Sim, associate professor of civil engineering, and his work with DataCenterHub, an online repository of information for researchers, were featured in an article from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

Mara Zelt, graduate student in agricultural and biological systems engineering, took second place in the student poster competition at the North American Manure Expo held Aug. 15-16 in Brookings, South Dakota. Her poster was titled "Antimicrobial Resistance in Beef Feedlot Manure as Impacted by Forage Concentration and Essential Oil in Finishing Cattle Diets." Zelt is advised by Amy Schmidt.

Five biological systems engineering graduate students earned honors recently in the CASNR and ARD 2018-2019 Academic Awards:

* Sandeep Bhatti, graduate student in agricultural and biological systems engineering, won the Farmers National Company Fellowship. This CASNR Teaching Fellowship is awarded to enhance the educational experience of graduate students, giving attention to teaching as well as other competencies. Bhatti’s advisor is Derek Heeren.

* Long Chen and Nuwan Wijewardane, doctoral students in biological engineering, are both winners of the Widaman Distinguished Graduate Assistantship. Widaman Assistantships are limited to students on Graduate Research Assistantships with identified thesis or dissertation topics in basic research in agriculture. Chen is advised by Jeyam Subbiah. Wijewardane is advised by Yufeng Ge.

* Enshi Liu, doctoral student in biological engineering, is the winner of a John and Louise Skala Fellowship. The Skala Fellowship recognizes exceptional graduate students engaged in research in areas relating to new industrial uses of agricultural products, and is awarded on the basis of academic and scholastic achievement or promise. Liu’ss advisor is Mark Wilkins.

* Aria Tarudji, doctoral student in biological engineering, is the winner of a Milton E. Mohr Fellowship in Agriculture. This CASNR Teaching Fellowship is awarded to enhance the educational experience of graduate students, giving attention to teaching as well as other competencies. Tarudji’s advisor is Forrest Kievit.
