Welcome to the first edition of Weekly Workflow!

We have created this special edition of Bits & Bytes to serve as a Monday check-in message that will help us stay connected to CSE students, faculty, and staff during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Weekly Workflow will contain updates in a message from our department chair as well as a helpful tips section for our students.

Weekly Workflow will not replace Bits & Bytes, and you will continue to receive the CSE weekly newsletter on Wednesdays. We encourage you to review both messages each week to stay up to date on current matters.

We also encourage you to visit our CSE COVID-19 web page for regular updates and additional resources.

Virtual Student Resource Center
If you need assistance with course work and would like assistance from tutors, the department will also be opening a Virtual Student Resource Center. The SRC front desk team will host virtual SRC hours and hope to provide a place where students can “stop in” and ask general and course related questions. We hope to make this available to students this week. Stay tuned!

A message from Marilyn Wolf:
Welcome back. We have been hard at work planning for your return to this new learning environment. All of that is on top of our normal duties: preparing for next year’s courses and conducting our research. I am working on a tutorial paper on hardware security for the Design Automation Conference. I’m also starting up a new research project for the Air Force Research Labs.

Professional Tip for the Week:
Remember this is your education and your responsibility. You have many resources; use them. As you begin your work from home, this link provides some great information.

From the site noted above, we have summarized 5 things you can do to stay focused and organized while working from remotely. We encourage you to review the site for more details.

1. Check Your Modes of Communication
a. Use and check your Husker email regularly.
b. Check Canvas regularly. Review our Canvas calendar.
c. Use the Canvas inbox.

2. Get Organized for This New Environment
a. Check how your courses will meet. Review the revised syllabi.
b. Develop or adjust your assignment schedule. Plan your action.
c. Review your assignment deadlines and exams for any changes.
d. Explore your resources. Many are available online.

3. Set and Stick to a Schedule
(This is the most important recommendation for people who work from home.)
a. If you don’t use a calendar system now is the time to start. You can transfer your Canvas calendar to a Google or Outlook calendar.
b. Be careful of trying to multi-task when you are working remotely. Research indicates it is far less effective than we think. Dedicate time to specific work.

4. Ensure Internet, Device, and Tool Access
a. At minimum you will need access to Canvas (canvas.unl.edu).
b. Get familiar with Zoom. Many faculty will use it. The university has also put together this tutorial for new Zoom users.
c. Don’t be afraid to ask: UNL Husker Helpdesk: support@ Nebraska.edu.

5. Take Care of Yourself
a. Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is still available.
b. Make time for friends.
c. Stay active.
d. Take breaks, do something fun for you.
