Shankar Lakshmanan has Won the Mobile App Competition

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering would like to congratulate Shankar Lakshmanan, a recent graduate of the MS program, on winning UNL's Mobile App Contest. The abstract is as follows:

Identification of various species of fish directly or from their images is a challenging problem. Manual fish identification by novices and amateur anglers is prone to errors and can be slow and inefficient. This task can be improved by using automated methods. Using this android mobile app we can identify a set of common fish species based on the their physical characteristics that are extracted from their images. Side view of individual fish are captured using a contrasting background. Each fish is identified based on and its shape, size, and texture parameters extracted using image analysis techniques.

This app will also facilitate the users to upload the identified fish to a web based portal. The geographically distributed spatial information can be used to understand the patterns in fishing and the distribution of the fish species.

Other participants developed a HTML5 web app for the Building Automation System, an app for student discounts, a HTML5 web app on irrigation systems, and an app that helps create and find study groups on campus easily.

The competition was sponsored by Nutech Ventures, 42, APress, and Packt. Prizes included iPads and a Kindle Fire.
