School of Computing associate professors Sasitharan Balasubramaniam and Massimiliano Pierobon served as guest editors on a recently published special issue of IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications (JSAC).
IEEE JSAC is a monthly peer-reviewed scientific journal published by the IEEE Communications Society that spans the entire field of communications and networking. Each issue is devoted to a specific technical topic that is valuable to the research community.
This month’s issue, “Edge-Based Wireless Communications Technologies to Counter Communicable Infectious Diseases,” focused on the impact of challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and how technological advancements can play a role in solving and obtaining new knowledge of communicable disease pandemics. The collection of papers in this special issue includes novel solutions for contact tracing, molecular propagation properties of respiratory aerosol, and novel nano-sensors to detect virus propagation.
Sasitharan Balasubramaniam is an IEEE Senior Member whose research interests include unconventional computing using communication of molecules modeling and simulations and the Internet of Bio-Nano Things. He is an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing. He is also a technical editor for IEEE Academy for IoT and a past associate editor for IEEE Internet of Things Journal. In 2018, he was an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer for the Nanotechnology Council. He was recently named editor in chief of IEEE Transactions on Molecular, Biological, and Multi-Scale Communications.
Massimiliano Pierobon is a member of IEEE whose research interests include molecular communication theory for nanonetworks, communication engineering applied to intelligent drug delivery systems, and biological circuit network engineering. He is also an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing and is on the Editorial board of IEEE Transactions on Communications, in the Area of Modulation and Signal Design, with the following designation: Biochemical and Molecular Communications. He was named IEEE Communications Letters 2013 Exemplary Reviewer in appreciation for his service as referee.
