Graduate Research Assistant
Job Summary:
Our research team has been awarded a UNL Grand Challenges grant to identify effective strategies to develop a scalable, evidence-based media and information literacy program to bolster public resilience against adverse algorithmic impact on digital media. We are looking for a motivated graduate research assistant to work on this interdisciplinary research project with us. The graduate research assistant will help research best practices of media and information literacy from both the literature and our team’s partner listening sessions, analyze both qualitative and quantitative data we collect from research studies, and develop media and information literacy content and activities.
This will be a .49 FTE appointment with a salary, tuition remission, and benefits. The student can start working now from the fall of 2023. Funding for this position ends in August 2025.
Duties/Responsibilities:
• Review relevant literature on media, information, and algorithmic literacy to help produce public reports and research publications.
• Analyze qualitative and quantitative data we collect from research studies. Some previous training or research experience in qualitative or/and quantitative methods is preferred.
• Assist with developing grant proposals.
Qualifications:
• A current UNL graduate student from any major, preferably someone whose research interests are related to media, information, or artificial intelligence

Undergraduate Project Assistant
Job Summary:
Our research team is looking for a detail-oriented undergraduate student to assist with a UNL Grand Challenges planning grant research project. The goal of the project is to assemble an interdisciplinary team to identify effective strategies to develop a scalable, evidence-based media and information literacy program to bolster public resilience against adverse algorithmic impact on digital media. As part of our interdisciplinary project, we will host a symposium where guest speakers and UNL faculty members and students will discuss algorithms, digital media, justice, and ethics. We will also develop and implement a university-wide student participatory action research assignment in the fall of 2024.
We are looking for a current UNL undergraduate student who can work for one or two years on the project starting in the fall of 2023. The project ends in August 2025. This position requires a commitment of 10-15 hours per week in a regular semester; working in the summer of 2024 is also possible. All work can be done remotely; however, a weekly check-in meeting, either in person or via Zoom, is required.
Duties/Responsibilities:
• In the 2023-2024 Academic Year, the student will assist with planning for a spring 2024 symposium on algorithmic literacy. The student will manage travel arrangements for external guests, manage catering for the symposium, design and distribute promotional materials, and assist with other logistics.
• In the 2024-2025 Academic Year, the student will assist with planning for a university-wide student participatory research project. The student will communicate with participating instructors about our project, collect assignments from participating classes, and help analyze data for insights.
• In 2023-2025 Academic Years, the student will assist the research team in planning bi-weekly meetings and communicating with our partners about our project.
Qualifications:
• A current UNL undergraduate student from any major
• Strong organizational skills
• Attention to details
• Strong communication skills, including writing and oral
• Previous experience with event planning is preferred
• Expected to work at least one year on the project
