Understanding Health Disparities in Nebraska
Understanding Health Disparities in Nebraska

This 2023 Grand Challenges Catalyst Planning Grant project is a pioneering initiative aimed at improving healthcare access for underserved populations.

Led by a multidisciplinary team from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, which includes School of Computing Assistant Professors Bonita Sharif and Eric Markvicka, the project seeks to empower these communities through education and training opportunities, while also exploring innovative technological solutions to address health disparities.

With a focus initially on Nebraska, the ambition is to extend successful strategies nationally and globally. Running from September 2023 to August 2025, this initiative combines expertise from health, engineering, and the arts and humanities from UNL, in collaboration with the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s College of Public Health. Through symposia, community engagement, and collaborative planning, the project lays the groundwork for future initiatives to tackle one of UNL’s Grand Challenges: health equity.

Featured topics include:
• Rural healthcare workforce development
• Telehealth provisions in NE
• Young health equity
• iEXCEL
• AHEC
• Increasing native healthcare workers
• And more!

Save the date for Wednesday, September 25 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for a full day of learning either in-person or online!

In-person attendance will be at the Wick Alumni center near the City Campus Union in Lincoln, Nebraska. All speakers will be in-person.
