Celebrating Life and Work of Prof. Don Costello
Thursday, April 10
3:30–4:30 PM
115 Avery Hall
Join us for a celebration of the remarkable life and legacy of Prof. Donald Costello. With humor, warmth, and wisdom, he will share his extraordinary six-decade journey in computing—from his beginnings as a military communication officer to teaching his first college computing course in the remote wilderness of Alaska in 1956, followed by his time at Notre Dame, and ultimately launching his distinguished career at UNL in 1960.
Through his personal experience, he will reflect on the joy and challenges of co-founding the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at UNL alongside Don Nelson, shaping a future for countless faculty, staff, students, and professionals. Beyond his professional achievements, Prof. Costello will celebrate the love and support that defined his life—his enduring partnership with Mary and the guiding force of his faith.
Finally, Professor Costello will share his perspective on the mantra, “The Digital World is Not the Real World.” He will offer thoughtful insights on navigating modern challenges, including how higher education can face budget uncertainties.
More than just a talk, this is a tribute to a life of purpose, passion, and lasting impact.
Costello will also be recognized at the 2025 College of Engineering Faculty and Staff Award Recognition Celebration. Dean Pérez will recognize his many years of dedicated service to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and the College of Engineering by presenting him with the Dean’s Lifetime Faculty Service Award. The celebration will take place on Friday, April 11, 2025, in Red Cloud Room A at the Willa Cather Dining Complex (City Campus). The event will begin with lunch at 11:30 a.m., followed by the awards presentation at 12 p.m.
