Computer Science Education Week (CS Ed Week) was December 9 - 15. In celebration of CS Ed Week, the LPS Information Technology Focus Program, in cooperation with the local chapter of the Computer Science Teachers Association, hosted an exciting event on December 11.
Three faculty members from the CSE Department presented on applications of computer science and engineering in problem-solving in today's world.
Dr. Leen-Kiat Soh presented multiagent-based simulations to solve real-time problems in complex environments.
Dr. Mehmet Can Vuran discussed how wireless sensor networks help solve problems such as improving crop yields with prevision agriculture and monitoring endangered migratory birds for ecology. He also presented his on-going work on designing next-generation wireless networks for affordable Internet access.
Dr. Carrick Detweiler presented his work on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), ranging from enabling structural health monitoring of bridges to modern dance performances developed with the Lied Center and the Pilobolus Dance Company.
Each presentation also included demonstrations of related computer systems.
The event was held at the Information Technology Focus Program located at 285 S 68th St Pl and was free to all high school students. About 50 people were in attendance. The Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA) NE-Huskers Chapter was also on hand to co-host the event.
