Many freshmen students are trying to decide what minor they will pursue, if any. We have advice for which minors to pair with your degree and what you can do with them.

A business minor will be appealing to employers who require their new hires to understand their business structure in relation to their technical role. This can be most easily seen for Chief Technology Officers.

An English minor with a Digital Humanities focus will prepare students to go into academia. Also, English can be useful for those wishing to use their CSE knowledge for technical writing.

Are you interested in making an impact on the world around you? Try combining your CSE knowledge to develop technology for the environment. Environmental Studies will provide you with a grounding that you will need to pursue a career in the field.

Japanese will prepare you to work for international division of companies located both in the US and abroad.

You already have math credits as a part of the CSE degree requirements, so why not turn this into a minor that will look impressive on your resume? There is also the possibility of taking 5 - 6 more courses and turning your CSE degree requirements into a second major.

Computer science and engineering majors are required everywhere, even in government. For this reason, political science is a good minor for those considering careers in public service.

Philosophy is essential to ethical considerations of computing and are essential not only in research, but also when considering company legal issues. The logic component is also helpful for figuring out algorithms.

Physics is pertinent for quantum computing and processing the supercollider data. If you are planning to work with programs that will require a knowledge of physics, it is probably best to have a background in the subject.

Students should consider their curriculum and look at their degree audit when looking at the practicality of particular minors. For example, students in Computer Engineering will already be set to get minors in Electrical Engineering and Math, so minors in other subjects might not make sense. Computer Science majors will be more readily able to receive a minor through their ACE requirements, for example by adding one or two more courses in philosophy.

These are just some of the many minors that you can combine with a CSE degree. Minors are also available at the graduate level and require 9 credit hours of courses. If you have any questions, please speak with undergraduate advisor Chuck Riedesel or graduate advisor Byrav Ramamurthy.
