Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Week at UNL by attending the following events on campus:
Tuesday, January 20 The Chancellor’s Program will take place in the Nebraska Union Auditorium at 4:00 p.m. The keynote speaker this year is Willie Barney, the President of the Empowerment Network, a collaborative, community-based organization.
Following the keynote on Tuesday evening, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Union, there will be a special "Dish It Up" event focused on helping undergraduate and graduate students get involved in various efforts to confront racial injustice and community revitalization.
Wednesday, January 21 at 5:00 p.m. in the Sheldon Museum of Art there will be a screening of the "Bridge to Freedom" episode of the award-winning Eyes on the Prize documentary series, which details the historic 1965 Selma voting rights campaign. The film runs about 50 minutes. Afterward, there will be a discussion of the Selma campaign, how the history of that event compares to the current major motion picture depiction in "Selma," as well as where voting rights stand in American society today.
Voices Unleashed, an open mic MLK tribute night, is Thursday, January 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Nebraska Union Crib. It's sponsored by the Afrikan People's Union.
These events are wonderful opportunities for faculty, staff and students to learn and participate in meaningful discussion and action toward building what Dr. King called the "Beloved Community." Given the recent renewal of racial turmoil and protest in our society over issues of race and inequality, there is an extra urgency in this year's celebration.
