The Undergraduate Student Research and Creative Activities Poster Session took place April 14 and 15. The fair provided undergraduate students the chance to showcase their research and creative activity to others. Greg Atkin, Maanas Datla, Spencer Kulwicki, Jacob Greenwood and Spencer Landis are the CSE students who participated in the fair.
Here are the names of their projects:
Atkin under the advising of Leen-Kiat Soh: Applying Machine Learning to Improve Data Quality on the American Time Use Survey
Datla and Kulwicki under the advising of Leen-Kiat Soh: Operationalizing Automatic Poem Identification in Archrival Newspapers
Landis under the advising of Ashok Samal: Computer Vision Analysis of Platte Basin Time-lapse Project
Greenwood under the advising of Carrick Detweiler: Design of an Underwater Sensing System with Charging and Depth Adjustment Capabilities
One of the hardest parts of participating in the research fair is balancing school, a social life and working on research. "I make sure to get my course work done first, before everything else. After that I just split my time as needed between research and other things depending on how much I need to get done for the week," said Landis.
Datla agreed and said, "The hardest part of undergraduate research for me is having to effectively manage my time so that fits my schedule and as well as the rest of my team since we meet once a week and I have to get the tasks we set for ourselves done in order to move on and improve/add something to the project."
Although research takes dedication and effort, it's also a lot of fun! Atkin said, "I find the challenge of undergraduate research to be exciting. It's not like homework or class projects where there is a clear-cut method on how to solve the problem from the outset. Research deals with much more open-ended problems where nobody really knows what the answer will be until you do the actual research."
The CSE students who participated in the fair advise future participants to plan ahead, pick a project they are excited about and most of all, enjoy the fair. Kulwicki said, "It’s your chance to show others just how much you’ve done and what you’ve learned over the course of the research. Enjoy your time and show it to others."
