From the Adviser's Desk

The time to add classes directly using MyRED has passed. However, if there are special cases such as switching into more appropriate courses and adding internships with credit, doing so is still possible. There is an Add/Drop Form that is available in the office, and I have a bunch of them. The instructor and a college representative (such as me) will need to sign off on it. There may be late fees applied. Do check with me if this is something you need to do.

I have been helping a good number of students get into Internships with Credit. If you have a computing relevant position, including just part-time around your class and study schedule, it MIGHT qualify for credit as CSCE 491 for anywhere from 1 to 3 credits. On a case by case basis, the course may apply to a technical elective for both computer science and computer engineering majors. The process involves 3-way contracts among you, your job supervisor, and your academic supervisor (the person who assigns your final grade). Oftentimes I serve in that capacity, but always suggest finding someone else who is knowledgeable about your job responsibilities and can better interact with supplementary study and suggestions. Note that the time span of the job does not have to match the period of the semester. For additional information and forms, go to http://www.unl.edu/careers/experience/internships.shtml and in particular check out the "Internship Links" on the right side of the page.

Until this fall, job and internship announcements were spammed to all of you as they came to us. While very timely and useful for some students, it became more clutter for others. Now all announcements go to a central site and are published through this newsletter (see "Latest Jobs & Internships" link on this page), and posted immediately at http://cse.unl.edu/announcements/jobs.php. Connections to all this information are available from our home page, http://cse.unl.edu/ from which there are links to Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and LinkedIn, as well as CSE Bits & Bytes from which all recent and archived copied can be accessed. The bottom line is that in return for less clutter, you can still get very quick updates, weekly newsletter reminders by email, but there is more responsibility on you to keep watch!

So how are your classes going this semester? If you have concerns or questions, it is important to deal with them now while there may be flexibility to make adjustments. You are always welcome to visit with me (or any other administrator) regardless the source of the concern. Also keep in mind that we have an anonymous feedback form by which you can contact any combination of us. From the main site http://cse.unl.edu simply go to Contact Us under the Department roll down menu at the far left, or go directly to http://cse.unl.edu/department/contact.shtml

Keep in touch, and happy computing!
