-Please introduce yourself...

Greetings! My name is Hao Yang, come from Beijing of China, majoring in computer science. As a transfer student, I changed my major here in UNL from civil engineering to computer science. Although I have already study the other major for two years, I really don’t find myself passionate about it. At the same time, I heard that become a nerd and solve problems using computer is awesome, so here I am! The reason I choose UNL is because everything here just fit for me. People here are super nice and friendly, facilities in college are fairly convenient, and the weather here, is quite unforgettable.

-What advice do you have for younger students in the CSE Department?

College life is amazing! Most people would consider college life as their best time of their whole life. For me, I think one of the good thing in college is freedom, it could bring you endless happiness. For example, students could choose whatever courses they like, join all kinds of organizations and meet various cultures of people, etc. But at the same time, these freedom could also bring people some tough time. Because sometimes students spend too much time hanging out with our friends, playing games or participating other businesses. And they don’t have much time to deal with their assignments or exams. For my advice, I will suggest all the new students to experience all kinds of cool things in college, but, leave at least one seamster to study really hard. While I was a freshman, I worked really hard the whole seamster, so in the final week I felt fairly relax. That’s moment I realized how important to keep the balance of freedom in my life. Studying as hard as possible, having as much fun as possible, everything in college is enjoyable, I hope you all will have a good time in UNL!

-What experience has been most beneficial to you during your college
career?

I found team work experiences helps me a lot in my college career. Because I met a lot of geniuses in my teams, and they inspired me with different ideas and let me learned something new so many times. College just like a bridge for people, because it connects people from high school to society. Learn to communicate better with others in your team will improve your team’s productivity, and create a enjoyable working environment would also make your team time have more fun.

-What do you enjoy most about UPE?

UPE offers me an opportunity to meet some brilliant people in my department that I don't know. By working and talking with them, I could felt their passion for life and it inspired me to become a enthusiastic people like them. Also, I could hear some intriguing ideas here in some of the meetings or activities. For example, right now we are doing a project called “Puzzle of the Month”. We hope this activity could inspire students’ idea and at the same time offer them some benefits like a gift card to a restaurant near campus. And one more thing I can’t forget is every time when we have meeting, there will be either pizza or pie in the meeting room. People here are so sweet.

-Do you have any hobbies / what do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Soccer is my favorite sport and also my favorite thing to do here in Lincoln. While my team and I played UNL soccer games here, we got second place twice without a championship. The results could be better but the memory to fight with my teammates was quite unforgettable. Other than soccer, I also play boxing, table tennis and a lot of other sports. Because I would eat a lot after sports and I always enjoy my meal, so I can’t live without it.

-What are your plans for the future (job plans, travel plans, research,
etc.)?

This is my second year here in UNL, maybe it sounds crazy but I plan to finish my computer science major in two years. Last year I just start with some basic java knowledges, and now I am almost done with my senior design projects. Hopefully I could achieve my plan this year, and after that find a place to continue my graduate study. As for the plan for the future, I just hope I could be as happy as I am right now and enjoy my life. Thanks!
