Professor Peter Revesz recently completed his prestigious Jefferson Science Fellowship at the U.S. Department of State. Revesz is the first Husker to be selected for this fellowship.
Professor Revesz spent the past year in Washington, D.C. where he was an advisor for two offices within the U.S. State Department: the Office of Export Control Cooperation and the Office of Conventional Arms Threat Reduction. He also traveled to several countries (including Austria, Kenya and Ukraine) to help the U.S. State Department's weapons non-proliferation efforts. As an advisor on export control policies of sensitive dual-use commercial technologies, he assessed the possibilities of turning U.S. and allied countries' commercial technologies into dangerous weapons and proposed changes in export control policies.
Revesz also used his expertise in databases and data mining to assist the U.S. and partner countries in the prevention of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. As part of his work with the Office of Export Control Cooperation, while in Kenya and Ukraine, Revesz presented database management information sessions instructing customs officials about database creation and data mining techniques. Officials could then use the knowledge to identify potentially dangerous illegal shipments.
Having returned to UNL, Revesz now brings his experiences to students in the classroom and plans to augment his textbook with the details of his past year.
We are proud to provide our students with such accomplished instructors. Well done, Professor Revesz!
