CoJMC to host Google tools workshop

The College of Journalism and Mass Communications, in partnership with the Society of Professional Journalists and the Google News Initiative, will host a Google tools workshop from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 8 in the Nebraska Union Auditorium.

The workshop will provide free training for students interested in using Google tools to improve their research, news gathering, reporting, storytelling, market analysis and creative projects. Topics covered will include:

Google Trends
Google Scholar for reporting
Google Reverse Image search and other verification tools
Advance Search Modifiers
Google Dataset Search
Google Flourish Studio
Google Earth Studio
Google Earth Pro
Google Earth Engine Timelapse
Google Public Data Explorer
Datascraping with Google Sheets and other tools
The workshop will be led by Mike Reilley, a Nebraska journalism alumnus who serves as a digital trainer with the Society of Professional Journalists. Reilley is a visiting professor of data and multimedia journalism at the University of Illinois-Chicago and has taught Google News Initiative tools to more than 4,000 journalists and educators.

The training is free for all students. Participants should bring a laptop or mobile device and register by Feb. 4 on the journalism college website.
