The Gallup Organization, founded in 1958, is an international consulting firm that employs polling to develop business strategies for its clients. It is divided into four branches: Gallup Daily News, Gallup Consulting, Gallup University, and Gallup Press. The company's world headquarters are located in Washington, D.C. while its operational headquarters are located in Omaha. Internships are both difficult and rewarding, as is a career with the company. Here's what you need to know about Gallup and how to prepare for the application process.
What You'll Need To Know:
Working for Gallup requires an interest in numbers, polls, and current events. Recent projects include approval ratings for presidential candidates, a critical look at European job markets, and an analysis of the State of the Union Address. Having an interest in what the company does is crucial.
Gallup prides itself on the emphasis it places on its employees. Understanding the organization's mantra, "creating positive change throughout the world", is important. You should come up with ways that you think Gallup can have an impact on people's everyday lives and how you can contribute. This will prepare you for interview questions and give you a better understanding of your own skills.
Be aware of Gallup's pay-for-performance plan. This method is "...designed to motivate, challenge, and provide you with opportunities for growth". Convey this as being desirable. Also, emphasize that you are goal-orientated and work well under pressure, as this will show promise under a commission-based system.
Finally, know that Gallup interns work 25 hour work weeks during the academic year and 40 hours during breaks. Summer internships may also be available. Interns go through the same application process as full-time employees.
How To Prepare:
Do your research. Applicants first need to understand Gallup and explore which division they hope to pursue a career. Visit their website to see the latest polls and impress your interviewer by having this information on-hand. Prepare by joining a political science club or have an in-depth analysis prepared of current events. If your schedule allows, attend the Gallup Career Tech Night on February 23rd.
Apply. Applications can be found online through the Gallup Careers website. You will be directed to a web-based talent assessment to determine your strengths, which illustrates how likely you are to align with company culture and expectations. The test should take about 30 minutes and will hopefully lead to a phone interview.
Expect a telephone interview. According to Gallup, the initial phone interview lasts between 30-60 minutes and covers behavioral and analytical subjects. Be prepared to show that you are hard working, appreciate teamwork, and are willing to do your best for the company. Do not be afraid to speak about your experience and education.
Interview. Gallup wants employees that not only fit the technical requirements, but will mesh well with company culture. Interns go through the same application process as full-time employees, so treat the interview as such. Make sure that the company is a good fit for you and that you will enjoy working there.
Finally, remember that applying is a learning process. If you do not get the internship the first time, there is always next year.
