Last fall, the Office of Graduate Studies released a new application system (CollegeNet) for applying to graduate school at Nebraska. This new system replaced GAMES. After a semester of watching it in action, we wanted to share with you all some tips and clarifications on the process. Whether you are thinking of applying to a master’s program or just want to take a course this summer through the Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institutes, this list may be helpful to review.

Helpful Tip #1: If you are applying to the Master of Arts for Teachers degree in the Department of Mathematics, let us know that you are applying so that we can watch for your application. You can send an email to Marilyn Johnson in the Department of Mathematics at marilyn.johnson@unl.edu once you get started.

Helpful Tip #2: When you go to http://go.unl.edu/gradapp or https://www.unl.edu/gradstudies and click on Apply, it takes you directly to the login page of CollegeNet. It will default to the Log In tab. If you have not created an account on this system yet (it started Aug. 1, 2019), then you will need to switch over to the Create Account tab and start from there.

Helpful Tip #3: Regardless if you are applying to a master’s degree or as a non-degree-seeking post-baccalaureate student, you should apply for the term (i.e. semester) in which you intend to take your first class (not the first term that appears as an option in the drop down menu).

Helpful Tip #4: We are not able to see incomplete applications in the CollegeNet system, so you will have to be sure to complete each step along the left-hand side of the application and submit it in order for it to be complete.

Helpful Tip #5: Regarding transcripts, students applying for a master’s program need to submit official (meaning sealed and not seen or sent to you first) transcripts for all credit-earning institutions that you have attended, even if that is one course at one institution. Students applying as a non-degree-seeking post-baccalaureate need to only submit the transcripts from your degree-granting institutions. Admission based on uploaded transcripts is contingent on receipt of official transcripts. Students will be able to enroll only after official records are received. https://www.unl.edu/gradstudies/admissions/requirements#transcripts

Helpful Tip #6: There has been an update to the application fee policy. Currently enrolled students (graduate and undergraduate) at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln will now be charged $25, while the application fee remains $50 for all others required to submit an application fee. There is a no application fee for current UNO or UNK students who are applying to UNL, as you would fill out the Intercampus Application, which is only good for one term at a time. https://www.unl.edu/gradstudies/academics/intercampus

Helpful Tip #7: Graduate Studies has modified their definition of an active student. It is important to take at least one course out of every three semesters to retain your active status. Otherwise, you are considered inactive and will have to pay an application fee to be reactivated (likely $25).

Helpful Tip #8: Help is available! Reach out to Marilyn Johnson at marilyn.johnson@unl.edu in the Department of Mathematics with any questions about the MAT program or applying to UNL as a graduate student. Lindsay Augustyn in the CSMCE is also a resource at laugustyn2@unl.edu.
