Mathematics department celebrates achievements of past 25 years

The Department of Mathematics invites its supporters and alumni to MATH 125, an event from April 27-29 celebrating the 125th anniversary of the department’s first Ph.D., the 60th anniversary of its first Ph.D. awarded to a woman, along with other achievements over the past 25 years. Plenary speakers include:
* Gopi Shah Goda, senior fellow, Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, Stanford University;
* Graham Leuschke, professor and chair, Department of Mathematics, Syracuse University;
* John Meakin, Milton Mohr emeritus professor of mathematics, University of Nebraska-Lincoln;
* Jane Meza, associate vice chancellor, Office of Global Engagement, and professor, Department of Biostatistics, University of Nebraska Medical Center;
* Michael Parks, Math & Computer Science Division Director, Oak Ridge National Laboratory; and
* Judy Walker, Aaron Douglas professor of mathematics and associate vice chancellor for faculty and academic affairs, University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The celebration begins Thursday, April 27, with a reception at the Courtyard Marriott from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Talks throughout the day, including lunch and an evening banquet, will occur Friday, April 28, at the Nebraska Innovation Campus Conference Center. MATH 125 concludes on Saturday morning at Avery Hall with additional talks.

Participants will also hear from panels of women Ph.D. alumnae and professionals whose careers use mathematics outside of academia. Breakout sessions will be organized around the themes of faculty research, achievements of graduates, mathematics outside academia, and the department’s commitment to mathematics education.
