Registration is now open for the Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institutes (NMSSI). This summer we are offering 13 courses designed with K-12 math and science teachers in mind, using either an asynchronous online format ("on demand" style), a synchronous web conferencing format ("live" on Zoom), or in person.

The goal of NMSSI is to offer teachers of math and science intellectually rich graduate coursework that will enhance their ability to offer their students challenging courses and curricula. NMSSI courses are designed with teachers' schedules in mind.

This year's course catalog includes the following offerings for math teachers:

MATH 800P - Number and Operation for K-3 Mathematics Specialists
This course strengthens teachers’ conceptual knowledge of number and operation in the K-3 mathematics curriculum and connects the intuitive mathematical understandings that children bring to school with an understanding of place value in the K-3 curriculum. The significance of base 10 in our place value system, along with its role in arithmetic operations and their properties, is a major emphasis of the course.

  • Audience: K 1 2 3
  • Class #: 7957
  • Location and dates: ESU Workshops in Scottsbluff, North Platte, and Fremont: June 1-5, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
MATH 800T - Mathematics as a Second Language
This course is a study of numbers and operations from a teacher’s perspective. From an early emphasis on counting, cardinality and our place value system, the course will emphasize the arithmetic operations with an emphasis on fractions, decimals and the rational number system. An emphasis will be placed on units of measure and how numbers serve as adjectives that modify nouns (units). The course also focuses on problem solving and reasoning and developing the habits of mind of a mathematical thinker.
  • Audience: 5 6 7 8
  • Class number: 5116
  • Location and dates: online (asynchronous), June 8-July 10 (five weeks)
MATH 801P - Geometry, Measurement, and Algebraic Thinking for K-3 Mathematics Specialists
This course promotes a deep understanding of geometry, measurement and algebraic thinking and its role in the K-3 mathematics curriculum. Emphasis is placed on mathematical argument related to geometric relationships, measurement, spatial reasoning, patterns, relations and functions.
  • Audience: K 1 2 3
  • Class number: 7958
  • Location and dates: ESU Workshops in Scottsbluff, North Platte, and Fremont: June 8-12, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
MATH 812T - Geometry for Geometry Teachers
The main goals of the course are to strengthen your mathematical background for teaching Geometry. We will focus on fundamental concepts of Euclidean geometry, with explorations of non-Euclidean geometry for contrast. We will make extensive use of manipulatives and the dynamic geometry software GeoGebra. The course may be taken concurrently with TEAC 892: Integrating Geometry Learning and Teaching.
  • Audience: 9 10 11 12
  • Class number: 7960
  • Location and dates: web conferencing, June 8-18, 8 a.m.-12 p.m.
