Lincoln Southeast teacher Todd McQuistan, a former member of New Teacher Network who earned his MAT in 2016, was chosen as the recipient of the 10/11 Golden Apple for the month of May, 2018.

The 10/11 Golden Apple Award, sponsored by Doane University College of Education, is given to educators each month of the school year to educators who have had an outstanding impact in local schools.

Todd McQuistan's wife decided to surprise her husband on the last day of school. Sara busted through the doorway of her husband's classroom and exclaimed, "Every month, 10/11 likes to nominate a teacher for outstanding excellence...and Todd you deserve this. For the month of May, this Golden Apple belongs to you."

Sara McQuistan knows that her husband was born to be a teacher, "Two years ago, he quit teaching for a few years to work for my dad, with plans to take over the business and then after a few years of that he just said, 'I miss teaching, I am a teacher and I'm going back,' and he's here, right where he needs to be."

And LSE Principal Brent Toalson wouldn't argue with that: "He has found a way to make his calling his mission every day in terms of engaging kids and getting them excited about math."

This 2001 graduate of Wakefield High School just finished his ninth year of teaching, all of them at Lincoln Southeast. And he admits he was a little surprised to find out that he had been named the teacher of the month.

"I thought it was kind of crazy! We have a lot of really great teachers here at Southeast, so I'm just glad to be part of Lincoln Southeast High School and it's great to be honored."
